First Week of College

Hi my name is Jeff Voegele, and I am now a freshman at the University of Louisville. I began my college experience this past week as I began my first week of classes. I, unlike most of the other people that I know that were also entering college, was not very nervous or scared to begin my college experience. I was very excited to move in and to begin living on my own, with more responsibility and more freedom. I was minutely apprehensive about the classes that I was about to begin, but I had a feeling that I would get through them with little difficulty. Now that I have successfully completed my first week of classes, I am not surprised to see that, at least for me, the college life is not as scary as people make it out to be. Yes, the classes may be a little more intense and more demanding than high school classes, but at the same time, more time is also allotted to the students to complete their assignments. College classes are very different from high school classes. Obviously, there are going to be more students in each class, so with this fact, more responsibility is placed on the student. This became evident to me very quickly. Most of the professors do not even bother to take attendance, and they could care less if you showed up to class or not. Many times, it is also the student’s responsibility to be in charge of the assignments for the class. There may be an assignment due the next day, and the teacher will not even mention it in class. It is up to the student to keep track of the assignments and to turn them in on time without having anyone to remind him or her. So this has been my college experience thus far. If I would have any advice for an incoming college student, I would suggest for him or her to not get worked up over entering college. If you enter college with a positive attitude, everything will more than likely turn out fine.
